Thousand-ton cargo ship hit the reef and sank, six people on board were lucky to escape

28/Apr/2020
At 12:48 on April 16, when a Liuzhou cargo ship loaded with 1900 tons entered the waters of Guiping Tonggutan Beach in the Qianjiang River,it hit the reef and then the ship sank. After received the police, the maritime department quickly rushed to the scene for disposal.

It is understood that before the ship sank, the crew closed the valve of the engine room fuel supply line. Six people on board had successfully escaped ashore in a lifeboat, and all the personnel were safe.

Due to the twists and turns of the waterway of the incident, the turbulent water flow and the greater navigation density, there were constantly ships sailing through the incident waters. In order to prevent the occurrence of secondary accidents, the maritime department continuously broadcasts navigation warnings through the communication equipment of the sea patrol boat, and together with the channel department, additional warning beacons were set up on site to ensure the safe navigation of passing ships, and oil spill emergency equipment is prepared to prevent the oil leakage of the ship, such as oil booms, oil absorbent pads, oil spill dispersant and so on.

At the same time, in order to maximize the recovery of accident losses, the maritime department worked with the ship to formulate a rescue plan, dispatched sea patrol boats and law enforcement personnel on-site emergency duty, and anchored the wreck to fix the hull, and coordinated the cargo ship to carry out the cargo in the wreck cabin, then they continuously reduced the hull weight of the accident ship, which is convenient for the subsequent wreck salvage operations.

As of 18:00 on April 18th, the hull of the accident ship was stable, and more than 900 tons of cargo had been completed. As of 11 o'clock on April 19, affected by the water from the upper reaches of Qianjiang River, the Tonggutan Beach of the incident section rose 1.2 meters from last night. About 1300 tons of cargo has been completed and the bow has risen. To prevent the sunken ship from slipping out of the submerged area and affect the navigation of the past ships, the maritime department was organizing the ship to increase shoreline to further stabilize the hull, and rescue operations were still under intense tension.

Fang Jie, a rescuer from the Guigang Maritime Bureau, said that at present, the hull of the sunken ship was stable and did not affect the normal navigation of Tonggutan Beach. Next, the maritime department will organize the wreck salvage and lifting work based on the cargo delivery situation on the spot to ensure the normal navigation of the channel.
